SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- In victory rallies across state today, supporters celebrated as the California Right to Know campaign filed 971,126 signatures for the state's first-ever ballot initiative to require labeling of genetically engineered foods. The huge signature haul, gathered in a 10-week period, is nearly double the 555,236 signatures the campaign needs to qualify for the November ballot.

California -- Volunteers will be out in force this weekend at Earth Day events across the state in a final push for signatures to give Californians the chance to vote for the right to know if their food contains genetically engineered ingredients. The last day to gather signatures for the November ballot is Earth Day, Sunday, April 22.

Opponents of genetically modified foods are making headway in California with a proposed ballot initiative that would require food companies to label many products containing such ingredients.Backers of the initiative, including consumer activists and organic-food groups, said Wednesday they had submitted nearly double the number of signatures required by the state to place the proposal on the Nov. 6 ballot. California officials will take at least several weeks to certify the initiative, but people on both sides of the issue expect it to appear on the ballot.

A California initiative to require labeling of foods containing genetically modified ingredients appeared headed for the ballot in November after organizers said on Wednesday they had gathered nearly 1 million signatures in favor of the measure.The hotly contested proposal is similar to measures being pushed in other U.S. states and at the federal level as GMO opponents demand more transparency in food products.

Supporters of a proposal to require labeling for genetically engineered foods sold on California shelves took a step toward qualifying for the ballot by submitting nearly a million signatures today.Initiative proponents announced today that they submitted 971,126 signatures to county election officials across the state. Roughly 504,000 valid voter signatures are needed to qualify for the November ballot."We're very confident that we'll be on the ballot in November," spokeswoman Stacy Malkan said.
